Jen Berres: A leader's perspective
Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Jen Berres began her 30-year career with HCA Healthcare at one of our hospitals in Florida. Today, she is leading our people agenda as we prioritize investing in our workforce and ensuring colleagues have what they need to provide excellent patient care.
“I have such a connection to the people who deliver care and other support services,” Jen says. “Not just from my years working in the hospital, but because I have spent time in nearly every area of this organization. I’ve walked the halls of our ambulatory surgery centers, physicians’ offices, urgent care centers, warehouses and business offices. Those experiences have given me a deeper understanding of the work that we do and how it all comes together.”
Why choose HCA Healthcare

Earn while you learn
In many states, HCA Healthcare partners with academic institutions, community organizations and governmental agencies to offer individuals interested in healthcare the opportunity to learn a skill, complete a certification and begin a fulfilling career caring for others.
This is in addition to all of the ways that we support our colleagues as they grow their careers. For example:
- In 2020, HCA Healthcare expanded our commitment to education by becoming the majority owner of Galen College of Nursing. Our partnership with Galen has helped increase access to education and provided nursing career development opportunities that we believe will positively impact patient care. Galen College of Nursing’s online RN-to-BSN program allows nurses to learn on their schedule through streamlined, thorough and flexible coursework aligned with HCA Healthcare’s quality measures. Even more valuable is the HCA Healthcare-Galen College of Nursing Grant that allows direct billing between our two organizations. This means zero out-of-pocket tuition costs for colleagues pursuing an online RN to BSN degree.
- We offer programs such as the FastTrack Pathway to Clinical Care, which helps colleagues complete an associate’s degree for a career in nursing (RN or LPN), respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, surgical technology or medical laboratory technology.
- HCA Healthcare’s award-winning Leadership Institute is designed to build leaders who embrace our culture, grow the business and lead the industry. Since its inception in 2014, the Leadership Institute has graduated more than 27,000 colleagues.
HCA Healthcare is one of the nation’s leading providers of healthcare services with 190 hospitals and approximately 2,700 ambulatory sites of care, including surgery centers, freestanding emergency rooms, urgent care clinics, home health and hospice agencies and physician practices, located in 20 states and the United Kingdom.

HCA Healthcare Hope Fund
In 2004, destructive Florida hurricanes impacted hundreds of HCA Healthcare colleagues. Immediately, colleagues across the country asked how they could help and began sending in contributions for those affected.
One year later, the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund was officially formalized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit run by colleagues, for colleagues. Those who give to the Hope Fund are supporting their fellow colleagues who face financial hardship due to natural disaster, illness or injury, domestic violence, death of a loved one or other unexpected situations. Since it's inception, the Hope Fund has distributed over $115 million in grants to help more than 56,000 HCA Healthcare families.
